How To Organize Your Kitchen? There’s no doubt about it, a well-organized kitchen is an efficient one. Learning how to organize your kitchen is easy if you keep a few key factors in mind.

Here you can read about the importance of purging yourself of kitchen items you don’t need, discusses the importance of replacing (or in some cases repairing) things that don’t work properly, as well as the importance of storing items close to where they’ll be used. You’ll also learn why keeping your counters clutter-free is important and why taking the time to clean as you go saves you time in the long run.

Purge

When was the last time your used that melon baller or cookie press? What about all those other kitchen gadgets you have lying around – do you even know what they do? And what about those items you have duplicates of – do you really need to have more than one?

Consider also what kinds of tools you have that could do double duty. Plus if you get rid of those extra items you don’t really need, you won’t waste valuable kitchen storage space or have to hunt past them when looking for other things.

Fix or replace

A kitchen isn’t efficient if it contains things that don’t work up to par. If only one side of your toaster works or the non-stick finish on your frying pan is worn – replace it! However if the item is something that can be fixed, don’t automatically toss it. Instead try to fix it yourself or find a reputable handyman or service person to do the job.

Keep things accessible

Efficient kitchens are all about having what you need at your fingertips. You can enhance the efficiency of your kitchen even more by storing the items you use on a frequent basis close to the area of your kitchen you use them in. That way, you save unnecessary steps and don’t have to search out all the necessary items to complete a task.

Infrequently used items like the pan you roast your holiday turkey in should be stored on a high shelf or in the back of a kitchen cabinet. You could also opt to store such items elsewhere in your home like in the garage, basement, guest room closet, or even in a box under your bed.

Eliminate clutter

If it doesn’t need to be on your counter – get rid of it. Only tools you need to keep handy and those that can’t be stored in drawers, cabinets, or hung on your backsplash should be kept on your kitchen counters.

Cleaning job

It really pays to organize and clean at the same time. Each time you clean out a drawer or cabinet take the time to wipe it out before replacing the contents. That way, your kitchen is not only organized but it’s also clean and you won’t have to do another big cleaning job for awhile. Also, if you get in the habit of cleaning up immediately after making a meal or snack you’ll find regular kitchen maintenance less of a chore. Each time you enter your kitchen to perform a new task it will be like starting with a clean slate, you won’t have to wash a pile of dishes or clear off the counter first.

While the above are key factors in effectively organizing your kitchen, there are several other things to consider if you want your kitchen to operate efficiently on a daily basis. Give some thought to how your kitchen is used. Once you’ve considered the many roles your kitchen plays e.g. baking, entertaining friends, doing homework etc. you’ll want to create individual activity zones and related storage areas.
